UTICA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team swept the UM-Dearborn Wolverines on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 15-12 followed by a 10-inning 11-10 win in game two. Both teams play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Lawrence Tech (5-3, 5-3) opened the first game with a 9-0 lead in the bottom of the third. E Dopkowski singled to left field for a 1-0 lead followed by Tyler Childs (SO/Burt, Mich.) double to left to score Dopkowski to give LTU a 2-0 lead. Austin King (SR/Davison, Mich.) hit a two RBI triple to push the lead to 4-0 with King scoring on a throwing error by the shortstop to give LTU a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Robinette (SO/Midland, Mich.) made it 7-0 with a homerun to left field followed by Tyler Cleasby (SO/Commerce, Mich.)'s homerun to score Logan Grizzell (SO/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and give LTU a 9-0 lead.
UM-Dearborn (0-7, 0-7) battled back, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning followed by nine runs in the top of the fifth to take an 12-9 lead. Grizzell made it 12-10, scoring on a wild pitch. King cut the deficit to two with a homerun to left field to cut the lead to 12-11. Fannon hit the river over the left field fence for a two-run jack to give LTU a 13-11 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Logan Barker (FR/Chatham, VA) made it 15-12 on a two-run shot that score Robinette to secure the win.
In the second game, UM-Dearborn jumped out to a 5-0 lead after scoring a run in the first inning followed by four more in the top of the third. Lawrence Tech took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Childs singled in two runs to cut the lead to 5-2.
Childs stole second and scored on an RBI double by Fannon to make it 5-3. Fannon scored on a passed ball to make it 5-4 with King tying the game at 5-5 after scoring on a UM-Dearborn balk. A failed pickoff attempt scored Logan Barker to give Lawrence Tech a 6-5 lead.
The Blue Devils added a pair of runs in the seventh inning to push the lead to 8-5 as Barker cranked a no-doubter to centerfield. The Wolverines took the lead with four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 9-8 lead. Lawrence Tech got the run back in the bottom of the eighth, taking the lead on Fannon's second homerun of the day, 10-9.
The Wolverines tied the game up in the top of the ninth, but Fannon's RBI single in the bottom of the tenth to win the game 11-10.
Fannon finished the day with six RBIs and two homeruns while Barker added a pair of homeruns and two RBIs in game two. Burgess got the win in game one while David Klug (SO/Traverse City, Mich.) was pitcher of record in the second game.
