HITLON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's and women's tennis team's competed in the 2016 PTR Spring Tennis Fest last week and finished a combined 7-1 on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Lawrence Tech (12-1) men opened the week with a 9-0 win over Defiance (Ohio) College as LTU only lost eight games through the singles flights and dropped just three games in the doubles competition. Sergio Lopez (SR/Madrid, Spain), Robert Saitov (FR/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru), Mason Wenzel (SO/Howell, MI), and Vincent Colarossi (SO/Dearborn Heights, MI) all won 6-0, 6-0.
In what turned out to be the team's closest match of the week, Lawrence Tech edged out Michigan Tech 5-4 on Wednesday, March 9. Lopez won at No. 1 singles, Colarossi took No. 5 singles, and Saitov won at No. 6 singles. The Blue Devils opened the match with wins at No. 1 doubles (Lopez/Javier Alvarez (SO/Santiago de Compostela, Spain)) and No. 3 doubles (Colarossi/Saitov).
On Thursday, LTU faced Susquehanna (Pa.) University and cruised to a 3-0 lead following the doubles flights. Lopez and Alvarez won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles, Jan Horstkoetter (FR/Cologne, Germany) and Wenzel took down No. 2 doubles 8-0, followed by Colarossi and Saitov winning at No. 3 doubles 8-0. In singles, Lawrence Tech swept the flights as all six players won in straight sets with Saitov blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to win the match 9-0 and move to 11-1 on the season.
In the team's final match of the week, LTU faced Marietta (Ga.) College and once again blanked the competition by sweeping the doubles flights as Saitov and Wenzel won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, Colarossi and Lopez won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles followed by Alvarez and Horstkoetter winning at No. 3 doubles 8-0. The singles matches all went the Blue Devils way as they lost just three games in six matches to win 9-0 and improve to 12-1 on the season.
Lawrence Tech (10-4) women's tennis went 3-1 last week on the island as they defeated East Stroudsburg 7-2 followed by an 8-1 loss to Michigan Tech. Carolyn McCullen (SO/Westland, Mich.) was the lone point scorer for LTU as she won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
On Thursday, March 10, LTU cruised past Susquehanna 8-1 behind a solid 3-0 sweep of the doubles flights. Paige Fallu (SO/Livonia, Mich.) and Rylie Fallu (SO/Livonia, Mich.) won at No. 1 doubles 8-5, followed by McCullen and Missy Coolsaet (SO/Grosse lle, Mich.) at No. 2 (8-1), and Ana Hernandez Munt (JR/Barcelona, Spain) and Brittany Schmidt (SO/Richmond, Mich.) easily won at No. 3, 8-1. In singles competition, McCullen won at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-4, followed by R. Fallu at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1), Hernandez Munt at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-0), Coolsaet at No. 5 singles (4-6, 6-1, 10-4), and Brittany Schmidt at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-4).
In the ladies' final match of the week, LTUfaced Penn State - Behrend and took two closely contested doubles matches with P. Fallu and R. Fallu winning 8-5 at No. 1 doubles and Hernandez Munt and Schmidt winning 8-5 at No. 3 doubles to jump out to a 2-1 lead. McCullen and Coolsaet lost at No. 2 doubles 8-6. Lawrence Tech took five of the six singles matches to win 7-2. McCullen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, R. Fallu won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Hernandez Munt took down No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-0, with Coolsaet and Schmidt winning at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
The Blue Devils' women's team is back on the court Wednesday, March 15 at 3:30 pm at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University.
The Lawrence Tech men's tennis is back on the courts March 19 at 5:30 p.m. when they travel to Mingus Creek Racquet Club to face Olivet (Mich.) College.
